Luna Lauren Velez

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, New York, Luna Lauren Velez harbored aspirations of becoming an actress from a young age, evidenced by her second-grade school play performance. Following high school, she received a scholarship from the Alvin Ailey Dance School, leading to her first professional engagement in the national touring company of the musical “Dreamgirls.” Her early career also included serving as an understudy for Phylicia Rashad in the Broadway production “Into the Woods.” These experiences laid the groundwork for her transition into film and television, where she would later achieve widespread recognition.

Velez’s breakthrough role came as Nina Moreno in the cop drama “New York Undercover” (1994), a performance that brought her significant attention. She further established her career with critical roles such as Dr. Gloria Nathan in HBO’s prison drama “Oz” (1997-2003) and María LaGuerta in Showtime’s “Dexter” (2006-2012). Her portrayal of LaGuerta across 84 episodes earned her considerable acclaim and solidified her status in the industry. Beyond television, Velez expanded into voice acting, notably as Rio Morales in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018) and its sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023).
