American R&B singer-songwriter Lyfe Jennings is a chart-topping musician best known for releasing seven albums between 2004 and 2019.
Born in Ohio, Jennings first began to develop his sound as a teenager, performing as part of a group called The Dotsons. The band, consisting of Jennings, his brother and their two cousins disbanded in the early 90s. Jennings, who has been open about the difficulties faced in his early life, served ten years in prison from the age of 14, before embarking on his musical career with a newfound drive. Following his release, Jennings self-recorded a four-song demo, which he sold 1,000 copies of during his first informal residency at the Apollo. In 2004, he was signed to Columbia Records, releasing his debut album Lyfe 268-192. Two singles from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
The following years led to major success for Jennings, who went on to release the hip-hop heavy album The Phoenix in 2006 and Lyfe Change in 2008. Together, the albums featured Three 6 Mafia, Young Buck and T.I. In 2010, Jennings released his fourth studio album, I Still Believe, with Asylum Records and Warner Bros. Records, which featured Ludacris, Bobby Valentino and Jazmine Sullivan, among others. In the past decade, Jennings has released two chart-topping albums, Lucid in 2013 and the home-recorded Tree of Lyfe in 2015, which has been hailed as his most personal release yet. In 2019, Jennings released 777, his seventh album.
A multi-talented musician, Jennings plays the guitar, bass and piano, all of which can be heard across his discography. Today, he boasts over three million followers across his social media profiles.
