Allen Neal Jones, widely recognized by his ring name AJ Styles, was born on June 2, 1977, in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Growing up in a challenging environment, he developed an early passion for professional wrestling. He attended Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia, where he became a two-time state amateur wrestling champion, demonstrating his athletic ability from a young age. His journey into professional wrestling began in 1998 after being encouraged by friends, leading him to train under Rick Michaels. Styles quickly established himself on the independent circuit before gaining significant exposure in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 2001.
Styles’ career gained considerable momentum during his tenure with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) from 2002 to 2014, where he became a foundational figure for the company, earning the moniker “Mr. TNA.” During this period, he captured the NWA World Heavyweight Championship three times and the TNA World Heavyweight Championship twice. He was also the inaugural and six-time TNA X Division Champion, notably becoming the first wrestler to achieve both the TNA Triple Crown (five times) and the TNA Grand Slam (two times). His influence extended to other promotions, including Ring of Honor (ROH), where he was the first ROH Pure Champion, and later New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he secured two IWGP Heavyweight Championships and led the Bullet Club.
In 2016, Styles made a highly anticipated return to WWE, signing a multi-year contract after previous appearances in 2001 and 2002. His re-debut at the Royal Rumble marked a significant turning point, quickly leading to him winning the WWE Championship in September of the same year. He went on to hold the WWE Championship twice, the United States Championship three times, the Intercontinental Championship once, and the Raw Tag Team Championship once with Omos. These accomplishments made him the second wrestler, after Kurt Angle, to win both the TNA and WWE Triple Crowns, and the first to achieve Grand Slam status in both promotions. Styles is set to retire in 2026, citing a desire to spend more time with his family, after a career marked by numerous accolades and consistent high-level performance.
