Magomed Alibulatovich Ankalaev was born on June 2, 1992, in Teletl’, Dagestan, Russia. His early life involved training in Greco-Roman Wrestling at Dagestan State Pedagogical University, where he also earned the title of Master of Sports in Combat Sambo. This foundation in wrestling and sambo provided a strong base for his transition into mixed martial arts. He quickly established himself in amateur MMA, becoming a Russian and World champion, and was named the 2015 Mixed Martial Artist of Russia.
Ankalaev’s professional career began in 2014, and he rapidly accumulated an undefeated record in regional promotions. He secured the WFCA Light Heavyweight Championship and won the 2016 Akhmat FC Light Heavyweight Grand Prix before signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in October 2017. His UFC debut in March 2018 resulted in his only professional loss by submission in the final seconds of the fight. However, he quickly rebounded, showcasing his precise striking and tactical fighting style, earning multiple Performance of the Night bonuses.
His career progression in the UFC has been marked by a series of significant victories, leading to a title shot for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in December 2022, which ended in a controversial split draw. Undeterred, Ankalaev continued his ascent, culminating in his capture of the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in March 2025. His fighting style is characterized by patient counter-striking and effective distance management, distinguishing him in a division often dominated by aggressive grapplers. He subsequently lost the title in October 2025. Outside of fighting, Ankalaev owns a coffee shop called “Ankl” and practices as a devout Muslim.
