Manika Batra was born on June 15, 1995, in Delhi, India. She began playing table tennis at the age of four, influenced by her older sister and brother who also played. Demonstrating early talent, she trained under coach Sandeep Gupta and attended Hansraj Model School. As a teenager, Batra declined modeling offers to focus on her table tennis career. At 16, she turned down a scholarship to the Peter Karlsson Academy in Sweden, choosing instead to pursue her training in India. She briefly attended Jesus and Mary College in New Delhi before dedicating herself entirely to the sport, showcasing her commitment to becoming a professional athlete.
Batra’s career began to flourish in 2011 when she won a silver medal in the under-21 category of the Chile Open. She represented India at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, reaching the quarterfinals, and the 2014 Asian Games. A significant turning point came at the 2015 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, where she earned three medals: silver in the women’s team event and women’s doubles, and bronze in women’s singles. This success was followed by three gold medals at the 2016 South Asian Games in women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and the women’s team event, along with a silver in women’s singles. She made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, competing in the women’s singles event.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, marked a historic achievement for Batra. She led the Indian women’s team to a gold medal, defeating four-time champions Singapore, and also secured India’s first-ever women’s table tennis individual gold medal. She concluded the Games with an impressive haul of four medals: two gold, one silver in women’s doubles, and one bronze in mixed doubles. Her success continued with a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games in mixed doubles. In the 2020 Summer Olympics, Batra made history by reaching the third round of the women’s singles event, the first Indian paddler to do so. She has since continued to achieve milestones, including a historic bronze medal at the Asian Cup 2022 and reaching the Round of 16 in singles at the 2024 Summer Olympics, further solidifying her status as a leading figure in Indian table tennis.
