Margarida, also known as Jorge José Emiliano dos Santos, was a pioneering Brazilian football referee who blended strict officiating with a flamboyant, openly gay presence, inspiring dialogue and visibility in a traditionally conservative sport.
Jorge José Emiliano dos Santos, widely known as Margarida, emerged as a notable figure in Brazilian football refereeing during the 1980s. Born in Copacabana, Jorge developed an early passion for officiating, learning the craft at 13 during beach soccer games. He was influenced by respected referee Armando Marques, known for his decisive calls. Margarida’s career advanced from informal matches to significant tournaments, including the Rio de Janeiro league’s Guanabara Trophy in 1988. He established a reputation as a firm, no-nonsense official, emphasizing respect and discipline on the field.
Beyond his officiating, Margarida garnered attention for his distinctive style and open homosexuality. This was a period in Brazil where LGBTQ+ civil rights activism was beginning, yet openly queer individuals faced substantial discrimination and violence. Despite societal challenges and homophobic reactions from crowds and even football organizations, Margarida remained unphased, using his public platform to acknowledge his sexuality and challenge prejudices within the sport. His fearless approach inspired members of the Brazilian LGBTQ+ community and other referees to be more open about their identities.
Margarida’s legacy extends to influencing future generations of referees, including Clésio Moreira dos Santos, who adopted and expanded upon his theatrical officiating style. While Jorge’s ambition to referee a World Cup final remained unfulfilled, he left an enduring mark on Brazilian football by promoting individuality and challenging norms. He passed away on January 23, 1995, due to AIDS complications, leaving behind a history of courageous self-expression and professional dedication in a sport known for its machismo.
