Brazilian football referee Clésio Moreira dos Santos, or better known as Margarida, is best recognized for his eccentric style which he became famous for on YouTube. He began training as a referee in 1988 and four years into his career he came up with the ingenious idea to create a nonconforming referee persona. Deviating from the norms of the typical football role, Margarida’s trademark moves consisted of effeminate mannerisms and evocative movements, both inspired by the original Margarida Jorge José Emiliano dos Santos, Roberto Nunes Morgado, Alvir Renzi and Armando Marques. As if this wasn’t enough, he created a further spectacle of himself; wearing bright pink shirts, he demonstrably desired to be the most visible person on the pitch.
In a role that most would deem extremely exasperating, Margarida’s goal was to portray himself having fun in the role. This unusual refereeing style was put into play in 1994, after a game in the second league of the Campeonato Catarinense de Futebol in the state of Santa Catarina. This debut led to countless hires which saw him travel to 16 different countries, all the while his larger than life refereeing style made news headlines across several Brazilan Networks. After a wholesome decade, his career as a referee ended in 2004. Margarida now works as a Tourism Manager in the City of Palhoça in the metropolis region Florianópolis.
