Born on July 5, 1985, in Redding, California, Megan Rapinoe began her soccer journey at a young age, refining her skills through her teenage years. She attended the University of Portland alongside her fraternal twin, Rachael Rapinoe, where she excelled as a leading scorer in collegiate women’s soccer. Her collegiate career was marked by three anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, which sidelined her for parts of her sophomore and junior years. Despite these setbacks, she returned to play full-time in her senior year and graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
Rapinoe’s professional club career commenced in 2009 with the Chicago Red Stars of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league. She moved to the Philadelphia Independence and then to magicJack, where she contributed to the team’s third-place finish in 2011 before the WPS league folded. In 2013, she spent six months playing for Olympique Lyonnais in France, contributing to their Coupe de France and league titles. She then joined OL Reign (formerly Seattle Reign FC), playing a pivotal role in their NWSL Shield victories in 2014, 2015, and 2022. She announced her retirement from professional soccer at the end of the 2023 NWSL season, concluding her club career with OL Reign.
On the international stage, Rapinoe represented the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), earning an Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games. She was instrumental in the USWNT’s FIFA Women’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019.
