Mark Chao

Mark Chao was born on September 25, 1984, in Taipei, Taiwan. He is the son of actor and television host Allen Chao. After completing his higher education at the University of Victoria in Canada, where he earned a double degree in sociology and economics, Chao embarked on his acting career in the Taiwanese entertainment industry. His debut came in 2009 with the television series “Black & White,” portraying Wu Yingxiong. This role quickly brought him recognition, culminating in him winning the Best Actor award at the 44th Golden Bell Awards.

Chao transitioned to film, starring in “Monga” (2010), a gangster flick that achieved significant commercial and critical success in Taiwan. His performance in “Monga” earned him the Best Newcomer award at the Asian Film Awards. This early success paved the way for his expansion into the Chinese market, collaborating with director Doze Niu again for “Love” (2012). His career in China further blossomed with roles in notable films like Chen Kaige’s “Caught in the Web” (2012), for which he received the Best Actor award in the Hong Kong and Taiwan category at the Huabiao Awards, and Zhao Wei’s directorial debut “So Young” (2013).

Throughout his career, Chao has demonstrated versatility, taking on diverse roles ranging from action-packed detective characters, such as Di Renjie in “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” (2013), to romantic leads. He reprised his role as Wu Yingxiong in “Black & White: The Dawn of Justice” (2014), leading to a Best Actor award at the 16th Huading Awards. His return to television in 2017 with the fantasy romance drama “Eternal Love” significantly boosted his popularity, solidifying his status as a prominent actor. He continues to appear in both film and television productions, including “The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity” (2020) and upcoming projects like “Resurrection” (2025).
