Mark Andrew Labbett was born on August 15, 1965, in Tiverton, Devon, England. He developed an early interest in quizzing while working at a Butlins holiday camp, where he began honing his skills on quiz machines. This early engagement led to a deep involvement in competitive quizzing. He pursued a robust academic path, earning a Master of Arts degree in mathematics from Exeter College, Oxford, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in secondary education from the University of Exeter. Further demonstrating his academic breadth, he obtained legal CPE and LPC qualifications from the University of Glamorgan. Before his prominent television career, Labbett worked as a mathematics and physical education supply teacher, demonstrating an early aptitude for education and knowledge dissemination.
Labbett’s television career began with appearances on various quiz shows, showcasing his extensive knowledge. He appeared on ‘Mastermind’ in both 1999, specializing in the Olympic Games, and 2000, with ‘The Simpsons’ as his subject. He also competed on ‘Countdown’ in 2000, ‘Stake Out’ in 2001, and ‘Grand Slam’ in 2003. In 2004, he won £500 on Channel 5’s ‘BrainTeaser,’ followed by £1,500 on BBC One’s ‘SUDO-Q’ in 2005. His success continued on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ in 2005 and 2006, where he won £16,000 in a live version and £32,000 across two episodes of the main show. He captained the Welsh quiz team to fifth place in the 2006 European Quizzing Championships and led his team, the Rugby Boys, to victory on BBC Four’s ‘Only Connect’ in 2009. His consistent performance led to his ranking as 89th in the World Quizzing Championships in 2012.
His career significantly evolved with his role as a “chaser” on ITV’s ‘The Chase’ starting in 2009, where he became known as “The Beast”—a nickname referencing his stature and surname. This role extended to the American version of ‘The Chase’ as the sole chaser from 2013 to 2015, and to ‘The Chase Australia’ from 2016 to 2020 and again from 2022. In 2021, he rejoined the American revival of ‘The Chase’ on ABC for its second season. Beyond quizzing, Labbett participated in ITV’s ‘Sugar Free Farm’ in 2016 and became a producer for New Generation Wrestling (NGW) in the same year, making more physical appearances and even participating in shows by 2025. In 2023, he joined Game Show Network’s ‘Master Minds’ as a prominent expert, and he played Roger in the 2024 film ‘A Toast to Love,’ further diversifying his media presence.
