Matthew Fox

Matthew Chandler Fox was born on July 14, 1966, in Abington, Pennsylvania. His early life involved a move to Crowheart, Wyoming, where his father, a former oil company consultant, raised longhorn cattle and horses and grew barley. Fox attended Deerfield Academy for a post-graduate year and later matriculated at Columbia University, majoring in Economics with initial aspirations for a career on Wall Street. During his time at Columbia, he also played football as a wide receiver. A suggestion from his then-girlfriend’s mother, a modeling agent, led him to pursue modeling. This professional exposure eventually transitioned into acting opportunities, marking a significant turn from his academic and athletic pursuits.

Fox made his acting debut in 1992 with an appearance on an episode of “Wings” and a role in the short-lived series “Freshman Dorm.” His career gained significant momentum in 1994 when he was cast as Charlie Salinger in the popular teen drama “Party of Five.” This role lasted for six seasons until 2000, establishing him as a recognized face in television. After “Party of Five,” he starred in another TV series, “Haunted,” in 2002. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2004 with his casting as Dr. Jack Shephard in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful drama series “Lost.” This role, which he played until the show’s conclusion in 2010, earned him widespread recognition, a Golden Globe nomination, and a Satellite Award.

Throughout his tenure on “Lost,” Fox also expanded his filmography. Notable movie appearances include roles in “We Are Marshall” (2006), “Vantage Point” (2008), and “Speed Racer” (2008). Post-“Lost,” he continued to take on diverse film roles, such as the villain Michael “The Butcher” Sullivan in “Alex Cross” (2012), General Bonner Fellers in “Emperor” (2012), and a parajumper in “World War Z” (2013). In 2015, he starred in the films “Extinction” and the critically acclaimed Western “Bone Tomahawk.” After a period away from acting to focus on family, he returned to television in 2021 as the lead in the limited series “Last Light,” where he also served as an executive producer.
