Matthew Hudson-Smith is a medal-winning track and field sprinter who specialises in the 400m. He holds a personal best time of 44.48 secs in the 400m, which was set during the 2016 Rio Olympics, and 20.88 secs in the 200m. He was a gold medallist in the 4 x 400m relay at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and a gold medallist in the 400m at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin. He was also a double bronze medallist at the 2013 European Athletics Junior Championships.
Born and raised in Wolverhampton, Hudson-Smith began running at an early age, joining the Birchfield Harriers club in Birmingham. He went on to win the English Schools 200m title in 2013. He made his debut for Britain at the 2013 European Junior Championships the same year, winning bronze in the 200m and 4 x 400m. His breakthrough season came in 2014 when he broke 45 secs in the 400m at Glasgow with a time of 44.97 secs, becoming only the second teenager to break 45 secs for the one lap event. This qualified him for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where he helped his team take gold in the 4 x 400m. In 2016 he won the British Championship, the London Diamond League and qualified for the Olympic Games 400m final in Rio. He has now relocated to Florida, where he trains under coach Lance Brauman.
