Matthew Santoro was born on July 16, 1985, in Ontario, Canada. After graduating from Brock University with a Master of Accountancy in 2010, he began his career as an accountant. During this time, he also started creating videos for YouTube, initially focusing on skits. A turning point occurred in 2012 when he was laid off from his accounting position, which led him to dedicate more attention to his YouTube channel. He observed that his fact-based compilation videos, including his popular ‘top ten’ lists and ’50 Amazing Facts To Blow Your Mind’ series, garnered significantly more viewership. This realization prompted a shift in his content strategy, leading him to produce these types of videos more frequently, contributing to a rapid increase in his subscriber count and overall viewership.
Santoro quickly established himself as a prominent online personality, transitioning from an accountant to a full-time YouTuber. His channel, “Matthew Santoro,” grew to millions of subscribers and billions of views, driven by his consistent production of educational and comedic content. He expanded his reach beyond YouTube through various other ventures, including hosting the “Food for Thought” web series for Quest Nutrition in 2015 and co-hosting major events like the Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day event and the Global Citizen Festival. In June 2015, he secured a global publishing deal with Penguin Books for his book, “MIND=BLOWN,” which was released in August 2016, further solidifying his status as an educator and content creator. He was also recognized with a Streamy Award in 2015 for Breakout Creator.
Over the years, Santoro has engaged in numerous collaborations with other notable YouTubers and public figures, such as CinemaSins, Vsauce3 (in a collaboration with The Muppets), Lilly Singh, and Arnold Schwarzenegger for promotional series like “Terminator Genisys: The YouTube Chronicles.” In 2018, he marked a significant milestone with the 100th episode of his “50 Amazing Facts” series, featuring contributions from a wide array of YouTubers including Rhett and Link, Hank Green, and iJustine. While he temporarily shifted focus to Twitch streaming in August 2021, he announced his return to YouTube in December 2022, continuing to produce content for his dedicated audience.
