His collegiate career at the University of Maryland, College Park, from 2004 to 2006, saw him play a key role in the Maryland Terrapins’ 2005 NCAA College Cup national championship victory. He was recognized as a first-team All-American in 2006, leading to his selection as the first overall pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC.
