MD Ruman Shana – also known by his nickname Ruman – is the first Bangladeshi archer to win a medal in the history of the World Archery Championships. Shana made history for his country when he won bronze in the recurve single’s event at the 2019 World Archery Championships, and as well as achieving Bangladesh’s best international result to date also climbed to 13th in the world rankings and qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. Shana also won the gold medal at the Asia Cup 2019 in the Philippines in the men’s singles recurve category, and collected three medals – gold, silver and bronze – at the tournament.
Shana grew up in the Koyra village in Khulna, Bangladesh and was keen on different sports including football before he began playing with a bamboo bow when he was still at school. After entering local and national competitions, Shana’s first major title came in 2014 when he won the gold medal at the First Asian Grand Prix in Bangkok, Thailand. Three years later he won a second gold medal in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan at the International Archery Tournament 2017.
2019 was the year Shana rose to prominence as one of the world’s top archers, beginning with a silver medal in the ISSF International Solidarity Archery Championships, followed by a bronze at the World Archery Championships and gold at the Asia Cup ranking tournament. With the Tokyo Olympics just around the corner, Shana is reaching the pinnacle of his career at exactly the right time.
