Olympic gold medallist Michael Andrew is a competitive swimmer from the United States. He won the 100-meter individual medley world title in 2016. He competed in the 4×100 medley relay at his first Olympics, the 2020 Summer Olympics, where he won a gold medal, established a world record, finished fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke, fourth in the 50-meter freestyle, and fifth in the 200-meter individual medley. In the then-125-year history of swimming at the Summer Olympics, Andrew’s swims in 2021 at the 2020 Olympics made him the first swimmer to represent the United States at an Olympic Games in an individual breaststroke event as well as another individual event besides an individual medley. At World Cup circuits for swimming, he has 76 medals.
At the World Junior Swimming Championships in 2017, Andrew became the first person to set three world junior records in one session. At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, he made history by becoming the first male swimmer to place in the finals of the 50-meter races in all four strokes—backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle—at one World Aquatics Championships. He earned three medals in individual competition at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships: silver in the 50-meter freestyle, bronze in the 50-meter breaststroke, and bronze in the 50-meter butterfly.
In addition to holding previous world junior records in the 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre butterfly, 100 metre breaststroke, and 200 metre individual medley in long course metres, Andrew is the current holder of the 50 metre freestyle world record. In the long course 4×100 metre medley relay, in which he swam breaststroke along with Ryan Murphy (backstroke), Caeleb Dressel (butterfly), and Zach Apple, he also set a world record and an Olympic record (freestyle). In the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke events, Andrew has set numerous continental and national records over the course of his career.
