Known for his innovative Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT) methodology, Michael Andrew became the youngest American swimmer to turn professional in 2013, breaking over 100 National Age Group records in his junior career. His international debut in 2015 at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Singapore saw him secure a gold medal in the 50-meter backstroke and earn the distinction of male swimmer of the meet. Building on this success, Andrew claimed his first senior world title in the 100-meter individual medley at the 2016 World Short Course Championships in Windsor, Canada. In 2017, he achieved a remarkable feat at the World Junior Championships, setting three world junior records in less than an hour across the 50-meter backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle events.
Andrew continued to dominate, earning four national titles in breaststroke, freestyle, and butterfly events in 2018. That same year, he secured his first long course international title with a gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships and established his first world record as part of the mixed 4×50 meter medley relay, contributing the breaststroke leg. By 2019, Andrew made history at a single FINA World Championships by becoming the first male swimmer to final in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle events at the 50-meter distance. He further demonstrated his versatility and prowess, becoming a multiple-time national record holder in the long course 100-meter breaststroke by 2021.
Following the 2024 Olympic Trials, he made a significant training change, relocating to Arizona State University to prepare for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. Andrew leverages his rapidly growing YouTube channel, boasting over 60,000 subscribers, to share his journey and passions beyond swimming, embracing his role as an influencer and continually challenging himself creatively both in and out of the pool.
