Michelle Gomez was born on November 23, 1966, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Tony and May Gomez. Her father, from Montserrat and of Portuguese descent, worked as a photographer, while her mother managed a modeling agency. From a young age, inspired by a production of “Kiss Me, Kate” at age seven, Gomez aspired to be an actress. She pursued this ambition by attending Shawlands Academy from 1978 to 1983 and later training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Her early career saw her take on roles in British television shows and films, establishing her presence on screen.
Gomez’s career gained significant momentum with her major role in the 1998 film “The Acid House.” She then became a recognizable face in British comedy, starring in the cult Channel 4 comedy-drama “The Book Group” from 2002 to 2003, followed by her role as staff liaison officer Sue White in “Green Wing” from 2004 to 2007. She also appeared as Michelle in the BBC series “Carrie and Barry” and PC Sally Bobbins in the BBC 2 sitcom “Feel the Force.” A turning point in her career came with her recurring role as Missy, an incarnation of the Master, in the long-running science fiction series “Doctor Who” from 2014 to 2017. Her performance earned her a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress, solidifying her reputation for portraying memorable characters.
Following her success in “Doctor Who,” Michelle Gomez continued to build her career with prominent roles in various genres. She received further critical acclaim for her portrayal of Lilith / Madam Satan and Mary Wardwell in the Netflix supernatural horror series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” from 2018 to 2020. She also took on the role of Miranda Croft in the HBO Max dark comedy thriller series “The Flight Attendant” from 2020 to 2022, and Madame Rouge in “Doom Patrol” from 2021 to 2023. Beyond live-action, Gomez has lent her voice to animated projects and video games, including Morag in “The Loud House Movie” in 2021 and Ghilan’nain in “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” in 2024. In 2025, she is scheduled to voice Minerva McGonagall in “Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions,” demonstrating her continued engagement in notable entertainment projects.
