Brey’s legacy at Notre Dame was marked by numerous tournament appearances, conference championships, and historic achievements, making him one of the most successful coaches in the program’s history.
Brey began his coaching journey as an assistant coach at his former high school, DeMatha Catholic High School, before moving on to Duke University as an assistant coach. In 1995, he took over his first head coaching job at the University of Delaware, leading the team to two America East Conference Championships and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2000, Brey was hired as the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a team that had not made the NCAA Tournament since 1990. Under his leadership, the team experienced great success, making the tournament multiple times and achieving a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2003. During his tenure at Notre Dame, Brey had several notable seasons and was even named the Big East Coach of the Year across consecutive years. With a staggering 472 wins at Notre Dame under his belt, Brey is the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach in the school’s history. Overall, his 571 career wins ranks an impressive 17th among active Division I head coaches.
In his personal background, Brey comes from a family of athletes – his late father, Paul, was a high school athletics director while his mother, the late Betty Mullen, was the women’s swimming coach at George Washington. A dedicated family man, Brey has two children and continues to pass on the family’s astonishing athletic streak. Perennially voted as one of the most likeable coaches in college basketball, Brey’s accomplishments – both on and off the court – are well known in the industry and he has exciting years ahead of him as he continues coaching.
