Michael Zapcic, often known as Mike Zapcic or “Chief,” developed an early interest in comic books, beginning to read them at the age of three. This early exposure to the worlds of characters like Iron Man, Avengers, Captain America, Superboy, and the Legion of Superheroes laid the foundation for his encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel and DC comics. His detailed memory for comic book lore and pop culture made him a recognized authority in the field, extending into independent materials as well. After completing culinary school and working as a cook, he joined Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, Kevin Smith’s comic book store in Red Bank, New Jersey, in 2000, a role he describes as his “greatest job in the world.”
Zapcic gained significant public recognition as a main cast member of the AMC reality TV show “Comic Book Men” from 2012 to 2018. The series, set at Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, showcased his deep understanding of comic books and collectibles, entertaining audiences for seven seasons. Beyond television, Zapcic expanded his media presence by hosting several weekly podcasts, including “I Sell Comics” with Ming Chen on Kevin Smith’s S.I.R.: SModcast Internet Radio network, “The Ming & Mike Show,” and “Dinner and a Podcast.” These podcasts cover comic book news, developments, and general pop culture topics, further solidifying his position as a respected voice in the community.

He appeared as “Comic Book Man” in “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” (2019) and had roles in “Clerks III” (2022) as a Hockey Player and “Banjo and Buckshot’s Christmastime Caper” (2023) as Sheriff Sonny Justice. His personal life saw challenges, such as rebuilding his comic book collection after Hurricane Sandy flooded his home.Zapcic, who lives in Long Branch, NJ, is married to Julia, whom he met after she noticed him reading “Wizard: The Magazine of Comics”; they have two sons, Mitch and Daniel.
