Mikko Rantanen is a professional ice hockey player known for his offensive contributions as a right winger. After winning the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, he transitioned to the Dallas Stars, where he continues to be a key offensive asset and has achieved notable individual milestones. After being rated the top European skater for the 2015 NHL Draft, Mikko Rantanen was selected 10th overall by the Colorado Avalanche. He debuted with TPS Turku in Finlands Liiga (2012-13), recording three points in 15 games.
By 2014-15, he was an alternate captain for TPS, accumulating 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) in 56 games, contributing to the TPS junior clubs championship and earning Best Player honors in the postseason. Rantanen signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Avalanche on July 13, 2015, making his NHL debut on October 8, 2015. Distinguishing himself in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the San Antonio Rampage, Rantanen led all AHL rookies in scoring with 60 points (24 goals, 36 assists) in 52 games and shared the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award for outstanding rookie in 2016. He also won a gold medal at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship with Finland.
Immediately impacting his new team, Rantanen made NHL history as the first player to score a hat trick in the third period of a Game 7, contributing to the Stars’ elimination of his former team, the Avalanche, from the Western Conference First Round in 2025. He also became only the third player in NHL history to record a hat trick in two consecutive playoff games in May 2025, solidifying his status as a premier offensive talent. Rantanen was named to Finland’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off (2024-25), reflecting ongoing international recognition.
