Tenpenny attended Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, playing football, before enrolling at Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a music business degree. His musical influences include Vince Gill, John Mayer, and Michael Jackson, contributing to his country-pop style.
Tenpenny officially began his music career in 2014. He released his debut album, “Black Crow,” in 2015, which featured the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers on the track “Canes Creek.” An early career milestone was co-writing Granger Smith’s Top 10 song “If the Boot Fits.” In 2016, he signed with the newly formed Riser Records.
