Australia Moana Hope has transitioned from a pioneering AFLW athlete to a recognized media personality and motivational speaker, sharing her journey and insights with diverse audiences.
AFLW players Moana Hope, Darcy Vescio, Chloe Molloy and Monique Conti have fronted Special K's first marketing push of 2020, dedicated to promoting the AFLW. Moana Hope was also signed by Collingwood and North Melbourne while caring full-time for her sister Vinny, juggling media commitments and running. As part of its sponsorship of the competition, Special K has enlisted players Moana Hope and Darcy Vescio as brand ambassadors. Moana Hope was born on February 14, 1988, in Victoria, Australia, and raised in Broadmeadows, Melbourne. With Māori heritage from her mother’s New Zealand background, along with German and Australian roots, she grew up in a large family with fourteen siblings. Hope began her Australian rules football journey at a young age, playing in boys’ teams at Glenroy until she was twelve. At thirteen, she moved directly into senior women’s football with Hadfield. Her talent was recognized early, leading to representative football for Victoria at age sixteen and captaining the state’s under-19 team. She also participated in the 2006 Ladies’ International Rules Series as a member of the Australia women’s international rules football team.
Hope had a significant career at the state-league level, playing for the Darebin Falcons and St Kilda Sharks in the VWFL, where she achieved multiple leading goalkicker titles. After a brief hiatus, she returned to football in 2013 and was drafted to the Western Bulldogs in 2014, playing in exhibition matches for three years. In a notable achievement in 2016, she scored six goals in a Western Bulldogs victory against Melbourne. That same year, she became the first female player in VFL Women’s history to kick over 100 goals in a season, finishing with 104 goals in 18 games. This milestone highlighted her as a prominent figure in the sport.
In July 2016, Moana Hope was signed by Collingwood as a marquee player for the inaugural AFL Women’s (AFLW) season, making her debut in Round 1, 2017. She participated in all seven of Collingwood’s matches that season, leading the team’s goalkicking with seven goals and ranking among the league’s top goalkickers. She was re-signed for the 2018 season and later joined North Melbourne in May 2018, playing for them in 2019 before being delisted. Beyond her football career, Hope has appeared on “Australian Survivor: Champions vs. Contenders” in 2018 and “Australian Survivor: All Stars” in 2020. Her memoir, “My Way,” was published in 2017, detailing her life and experiences. She is also engaged in public speaking and serves as a brand ambassador, continuing to influence various fields.
