Monty Don is a highly acclaimed British horticulturist, broadcaster, and writer, born on 8 July 1955 in Iserlohn, Germany. As a child, Monty spent much of his time in horticultural activities, mainly in his family’s large garden, which he now describes as a surreal and magical place. He went on to study at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he completed a degree in English literature.
Monty’s professional horticultural career began with a humble gardening job for the Stratford-upon-Avon Parks Department. However, he quickly progressed and became the editor of the horticultural magazine, Gardens Illustrated. His career highlights include being a lead presenter for the popular BBC Two programme, Gardeners’ World, and being the main presenter for the BBC television series, Monty Don’s Italian Gardens, Dreams of Nature, and My Dream Farm. He also presented the recently released BBC documentary series, Monty Don’s American Gardens.
Monty has authored many books throughout his professional career, including The Complete Gardener, The Ivington Diaries, and American Gardens, which are recognized as some of the most influential books on horticulture and gardening. His book, The Jewel Garden, which he co-wrote with his wife, received critical acclaim and won the Garden Media Guild Book of the Year Award in 2005.
Beyond his career in horticulture, Monty has also been instrumental in promoting environmental conservation and wider access to nature for communities through his Philanthropic work.
