MrBallen signed a licensing deal with Amazon Music to make his podcast exclusive to their platform for a three-year period. The deal also includes first-look rights to any new content from Ballen Studios, covering TV, film, books, and games.
Ballen Studios, co-founded by MrBallen, signed with the United Talent Agency (UTA) for representation across various media initiatives and content development.
Jonathan Bartlett Allen, born on October 1, 1988, in Quincy, Massachusetts, embarked on a unique career path that led him from military service to becoming a prominent internet storyteller. After graduating from North Quincy High School in 2006, he briefly attended UMass Amherst before returning and earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2010. Following his academic career, Allen enlisted in the United States Navy with the intent to become a Navy SEAL. He successfully joined SEAL Team Two in Virginia Beach in 2012, serving in deployments to Afghanistan and South America. In 2014, he sustained injuries from a grenade attack in Afghanistan, leading to his medical retirement from the Navy in 2017. This period marked a significant turning point in his life, leading him toward a new endeavor in digital content creation.
In 2020, Allen launched his YouTube channel, adopting the moniker MrBallen, where he began sharing victim-oriented true crime stories and mysteries. His engaging storytelling style quickly resonated with a wide audience, leading to rapid growth in subscribers. The same year, he ventured into TikTok, where a video about the Dyatlov Group incident garnered five million views, further establishing his online presence. By October 2022, his influence was recognized with four nominations at the YouTube Streamy Awards, including Creator of the Year. Building on this success, he launched the “MrBallen Podcast: Strange, Dark & Mysterious Stories” in February 2022, which quickly reached the number one spot on Spotify’s True Crime Podcasts chart. The podcast consistently received millions of monthly downloads, solidifying his position in the audio content space.
Further expanding his media empire, Allen co-founded Ballen Studios in 2022 alongside Nick Witters. This production company aims to adapt his signature storytelling style into various media forms, including television, film, publishing, and merchandising. Ballen Studios also secured representation with the United Talent Agency (UTA). A landmark deal in October 2022 saw Amazon Music acquire exclusive licensing rights for his podcast for three years, alongside first-look rights for new content from Ballen Studios. In 2022, he also established the MrBallen Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting victims and families affected by heinous crimes. In September 2023, he launched another podcast, “MrBallen’s Medical Mysteries,” focusing on medical horror stories and diagnostic enigmas, which is available across major podcast platforms.
