Mahendra Singh Dhoni, born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand), began his journey in cricket after initially playing football as a goalkeeper. He made his first-class debut for Bihar in 1999 and for the Indian cricket team on December 23, 2004, in an ODI against Bangladesh. Dhoni’s early career was marked by strong performances, including scoring 148 runs off 123 deliveries against Pakistan in 2005, which set a new record for the highest score by an Indian wicket-keeper. Later the same year, he scored an unbeaten 183 runs off 145 balls against Sri Lanka, further solidifying his position and earning him the Man of the Series award.
Dhoni’s leadership capabilities became evident in 2007 when he was appointed captain of the Indian squad for the inaugural ICC World Twenty20, leading India to victory. He then took over captaincy in all formats by 2008. Under his captaincy, India achieved significant milestones, including winning the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2016. He retired from Test cricket in 2014 and from all international cricket on August 15, 2020. Throughout his international career, Dhoni scored 17,266 runs across formats, including over 10,000 runs in ODIs with an average exceeding 50. He is also recognized as one of the most prolific wicket-keepers, with 634 catches and 195 stumpings.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Dhoni has been a prominent figure, primarily playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He led CSK to five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023) and two Champions League T20 titles (2010 and 2014), making CSK the most successful franchise in IPL history under his leadership. Dhoni holds records for most appearances in the IPL and was the first wicket-keeper to score over five thousand runs in the league. Post-retirement, he has engaged in various ventures, including serving as a mentor for the Indian team in the 2021 T20 World Cup, investing in businesses, and co-owning sports teams. In June 2025, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, recognizing his immense contributions to the sport.
