Born in Randfontein, South Africa, Neil Sandilands commenced his professional acting career at the age of fourteen, securing his first television role in “Meester” in 1989. He pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Rand Afrikaans University in 1996, where he was also recognized with an honorary award for his contributions to Arts & Culture, having consistently won its Theatre Festival with his self-written and performed plays. By 2000, Sandilands became a recognized figure in South Africa, largely due to his portrayal of Bart Kruger in the soap opera “7de Laan.” Demonstrating an ambition for broader career opportunities, Sandilands made a transatlantic move in 2003, with the art-house film “Proteus” marking his international film debut. His career progression highlights an adaptive approach, balancing local productions in his native Afrikaans with roles in global projects, while also engaging in endeavors outside acting to sustain his creative pursuits.
Sandilands’ international career gained momentum with various roles across prominent American television series. In 2010, he appeared in “House MD,” followed by a guest role in FX’s “The Americans” in 2015. The year 2016 saw him take on recurring roles as Titus in The CW’s “The 100” and Paco in AMC/Sundance TV’s “Hap and Leonard.” A significant turning point in his career came with his portrayal of the supervillain Clifford Devoe/The Thinker on The CW’s “The Flash” from 2017 to 2018. His recent work includes the role of General Abbot in Netflix’s “Sweet Tooth,” for which he received an Emmy nomination in 2023. Film credits include “News of the World” (2020) alongside Tom Hanks, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (2024), “London Calling” (2023), “Slay” (2023), and “Wetiko” (2022). Beyond acting, Sandilands is also a musician, releasing two full-length albums and two EPs, with his debut Afrikaans album “Sangoma Sandilands & Jou Pa se Posse – Maanskyn” reaching Number 1 on iTunes South Africa’s charts within 24 hours in 2021. He also earned a South African Music Award (SAMA) for this album and his music has been featured in the M-Net Originals show “Desert Rose.” His directorial work on the documentary “Impresario” garnered him an award from the South African Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he received a Clio in 2014 for another documentary.
