About

Born Carol Denise Ensley in Los Angeles on February 23, 1970, and raised in Compton, California, Niecy Nash-Betts discovered entertainment at age five after watching actress Lola Falana on television. She graduated from Gardena High School and later California State University, Dominguez Hills. After personal tragedy struck her family, she became a spokesperson for M.A.V.I.S., the organization her mother founded to address violence children face on school campuses.

Her screen career began in the late 1990s with film appearances in Boys on the Side (1995) and Cookie’s Fortune (1999). The breakthrough came with her portrayal of Deputy Raineesha Williams on Comedy Central’s Reno 911! (2003–09, 2020–22), while she simultaneously hosted the Style Network’s Clean House from 2003 to 2010, winning a Daytime Emmy Award for the series.

A run of acclaimed television roles followed: Denise “Didi” Ortley in Getting On (2013–15) earned two Primetime Emmy nominations, alongside The Soul Man (2012–16), Scream Queens (2015–16), and a Satellite Award-winning turn as Desna Simms in Claws (2017–22). Her collaborations with director Ava DuVernay spanned Selma (2014), When They See Us (2019), and Origin (2023). She also played Florynce Kennedy in Mrs. America (2020).

In 2022, her role as Glenda Cleveland in Netflix’s Monster brought a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress, plus Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations. She starred in Grotesquerie (2024), hosted the 39th Artios Awards in Los Angeles, and currently stars as Emerald Greene in the legal drama All’s Fair (2025–present), renewed for a second season.
