Music is the family business for poet, activist, drummer, bassist and rapper Niko Brim. He uses his exceptional talent to elevate the viewpoint of the underdog, with his tales frequently featuring characters who have a lot to contribute to their environments, yet are all too frequently ignored or written off. Brim’s mother, Misa Hylton, is the stylist behind some of hip-most hop’s recognisable looks, including those of Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, 50 Cent, and Foxy Brown. JoJo Brim, his father, is a prominent executive in the music industry who manages and produces some of our most renowned and culturally significant artists.
Brim is a native of Mount Vernon, New York, which is also the hometown of Sean Combs, Sidney Poitier, Nina Simone, and Denzel Washington. The ten-track “A Thousand Pictures: Book 1” was his debut album in 2016, and the subsequent 15-track “A Thousand Pictures: Book 2″ was released in 2018. Three tracks from 2019—”Feds Watching” (featuring Kamari), “Woke” (with Stunna Gang), and “No Breaks” (with Booka Banks)—all have become streaming hits. The singles “Hard to Believe” and “Bonita” were released in 2020.
“Right behind music comes community work”, Brim has said. “My instincts pushed me to fight food insecurity, because access to nutritious food is a human right. And possibly because I was raised by five women – five queens – I have a powerful focus on helping single moms, single dads, families. People who may not have the time to step in with their children, creating programs and after school programs to keep children fed and to keep them occupied and out of the streets.”
