Octavia Owen began her sailing career at the age of four, quickly progressing to racing by eight. Her early years saw her participate in various craft, starting with Cadets and later including Albacores and 29ers. Based on the Wirral, Owen honed her skills primarily at West Kirby, where she experienced her first club race victory in Cadets. Her involvement in keelboat racing commenced at 15 through the Youth Match Racing Nationals, setting the foundation for her professional trajectory in the sport.
Owen’s career is marked by consistent progression and significant achievements in match racing. She co-founded Athena Racing, an all-female team, which gained international attention after receiving an invitation to the WIMseries in Lysekil, Sweden. Under her leadership, Athena Racing has competed globally, traversing challenging venues in Russia, St. Thomas, San Francisco, Italy, Poland, and Sweden. Owen’s dedication to improving her skills and pushing her team’s performance has resulted in notable success, including two victories at the Marlow Ropes Women’s Match Racing Championship with her West Kirby team.
A key turning point in Owen’s career was receiving the inaugural Ian Atkins Keelboat Award in 2019 alongside Emma Wrixon of Team Athena Racing. This award provided crucial support, enabling her team to continue competing at a high level and subsequently improve their Women’s International Match Race Rankings. Owen’s journey exemplifies commitment to the sport, continually seeking out challenging conditions to refine her expertise and to inspire other female sailors to participate in match racing.
