Marie Rønningen was born on March 13, 1994, in Bærum, Norway. She began her sailing career at age 8, starting with the Optimus class. Her early experiences laid the foundation for her later competitive success in the sport. Rønningen is affiliated with Tønsberg Seilforening and has developed into a distinguished athlete on the international sailing circuit, primarily in the 49er FX category.
Throughout her career, Rønningen has achieved significant milestones. In 2018, she secured a gold medal at the 49er & 49er FX European Championships alongside her sailing partner, Helene Næss. This achievement marked a turning point in their partnership, establishing them as a formidable team. She continued to demonstrate consistent performance at high-level competitions, including a silver medal at the 2021 49er & 49er FX World Championships.
Rønningen has also represented Norway in multiple Olympic Games. She competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (held in 2021), where she and Næss placed seventh in the 49er FX event. Her career progression saw her return to the Olympic stage at the 2024 Summer Olympics, where the duo finished fourth in the 49er FX event, further solidifying her status as a top-tier competitive sailor. She also earned another gold medal at the European Championships in 2023, reflecting her ongoing dedication and skill in the sport.
