Oniel Fisher is an experienced Jamaican professional footballer who has won numerous caps for his country and currently plays at right-back and midfield for MLS giants LA Galaxy. In October 2021, he scored his first international goal for Jamaica, boosting his hopes of appearing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Fisher was born in Portmore, Jamaica, in 1991. He moved to America to study and play football for Tyler Junior College in Texas. He then enrolled at the University of New Mexico to play for their team, Lobos Soccer, becoming the institution’s first-ever Jamaican student-athlete in the process. He spent two years there, helping the team to reach the 2013 College Cup semifinals. After spending some time playing with the Jersey Express and New York Red Bulls U-23 teams, Fisher was officially drafted into the MLS by the Seattle Sounders in 2015, making his full debut in a game against FC Dallas three months later. After three years with the team, he moved to D.C. United and made just under 40 appearances for them although injury meant that he had to sit the whole of the 2019 season out. In early 2021, he was handed a fresh start by LA Galaxy, one of the league’s most widely known teams.
Fisher first represented Jamaica at U-20 level, making five appearances for them during the 2011 CONCACAF Championship. He’d already made his senior debut the previous year and has since won two-dozen caps that he’ll be hoping to add to should Jamaica qualify for the World Cup.
