Robert Lester Zamora was born on January 16, 1981, in Barking, London. He began his football journey in youth systems, including Senrab, West Ham United, and Norwich City. His professional career began with Bristol Rovers in 1999, where he made six substitute appearances. He subsequently had loan spells at Bath City, scoring 11 goals in eight appearances, and Brighton & Hove Albion, where he netted six goals in six appearances. This strong performance led to a permanent move to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2000 for a fee of £100,000. During his initial tenure at Brighton, Zamora became a prolific goalscorer, contributing to two successive promotions for the club. He scored 83 goals in 136 appearances across all competitions during this period.
In July 2003, Zamora transferred to Tottenham Hotspur for £1.5 million. He made 18 total appearances and scored one goal before moving to West Ham United in January 2004 as part of a deal involving Jermain Defoe. At West Ham, Zamora played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2004–05 season, scoring the winning goal in the 2005 Championship play-off final. He remained with West Ham for five years, making 152 appearances and scoring 40 goals overall. In July 2008, he joined Fulham for a fee of £4.8 million. His time at Fulham, particularly the 2009–10 season, was marked by significant contributions to the club’s Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League campaigns, including reaching the Europa League final. He dislocated his shoulder in January 2010 but returned to form.
Zamora moved to Queens Park Rangers in January 2012. He was instrumental in their promotion to the Premier League in 2014, scoring the only goal in the 2014 Championship play-off final. He returned to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2015 for a final playing spell before retiring in December 2016 due to a persistent hip injury. Post-retirement, Zamora has been involved in social housing initiatives and more recently took on a coaching role with Brighton & Hove Albion in October 2024, focusing on developing attacking players. He also appeared in a fishing series called The Grand Fishing Adventure in 2022.
