Patrick Dempsey began his extensive acting career in 1983 with a stage production of Torch Song Trilogy before quickly transitioning to significant film roles, gaining early recognition in 1980s teen comedies like Can’t Buy Me Love (1987) and Loverboy (1989). He further showcased his dramatic range by portraying real-life mob boss Meyer Lansky in Mobsters (1991). Dempsey’s versatility continued to be recognized with an Emmy nomination in 2001 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Aaron Brooks in Once & Again. His film credits during this period also included Scream 3 (2000), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), and the HBO production Iron Jawed Angels (2004).
He also served as Executive Producer for the 2011 feature film Flypaper and returned to romantic comedies in Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016). Beyond his acting prowess, Dempsey is an accomplished and competitive auto racer. He is a co-owner of Dempsey Racing, which has competed in prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rolex 24 at Daytona, and the Baja 1000, as well as series such as the American Le Mans Series and the FIA World Endurance Championship. His dedication to motorsports led to a remarkable second-place finish in class at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, following his participation in the GT2 class in 2009.
Committed to philanthropy, Dempsey founded the Patrick Dempsey Center at Central Maine Medical Center, an initiative dedicated to providing cancer support, and organizes the annual Dempsey Challenge, a fundraising event for the center.
