Paul McKenna was born on November 8, 1963, in Enfield, London. Diagnosed with dyslexia, he faced challenges during his early education at St Ignatius College. His career began at the age of 16 in Radio Top Shop, and he later worked as a presenter for stations such as Radio Caroline and Capital London. McKenna hosted a number of television programs including ‘The Hypnotic World of Paul McKenna’ (1993–97), ‘The Paranormal World of Paul McKenna’ (1996–97), and ‘Hyp the Streets’ (1999). He received the Television and Radio Industries Club Award for Best TV Newcomer in 1994, which marked a significant milestone in his television career.
His interest in hypnotism deepened after an encounter with a local hypnotist. This led him to pursue studies in hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) with Richard Bandler, a co-creator of NLP. Early in his career, while working at Capital Radio, McKenna conducted small hypnosis shows in various venues including pubs, clubs, military bases, and universities. The success of these shows led to touring performances across the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, the US, Australia, and Hong Kong. McKenna has also engaged in research, earning a PhD from LaSalle University in Louisiana in 1996, and a subsequent PhD from Revans University in 2003, focusing on the effects of fixed action patterns and NLP on human behavior.
Over two decades, McKenna has authored numerous self-help books and developed applications designed to assist individuals in areas such as weight loss, smoking cessation, stress management, and building self-confidence. He has worked with a diverse clientele including Olympic gold medalists, world champion athletes, business leaders, musicians, and actors. His work involves using advanced techniques to address conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder, severe trauma, and pain control, demonstrating his commitment to practical applications of behavioral science.
