Paul Walter Hauser was born on October 15, 1986, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was raised in Saginaw, Michigan, where his father, Rev. Paul Hauser, served as a Lutheran minister. Hauser attended Valley Lutheran High School and later Concordia University Chicago before leaving to pursue a career in entertainment. He began his career in comedy, performing stand-up at the age of 16. His early acting roles included an uncredited part in the 2011 film ‘Demoted’ and a role as Dale in the 2010 film ‘Virginia’.
Hauser gained notable recognition for his supporting roles, such as Shawn Eckhardt in the 2017 film ‘I, Tonya’ and Lonnie Laloush in ‘Super Troopers 2’ in 2018. The same year, he appeared as Ivanhoe in ‘BlacKkKlansman’. His career significantly progressed in 2019 when he took on the title role in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Richard Jewell’, a performance that earned him a Breakthrough Performance award from the National Board of Review. He also had a recurring role as Raymond ‘Stingray’ Porter in the Netflix series ‘Cobra Kai’ from 2019 to 2025.
In recent years, Hauser has expanded his range with critical acclaim. In 2022, he starred as serial killer Larry Hall in the Apple TV+ miniseries ‘Black Bird’, a role for which he was awarded a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. He lent his voice to animated features such as Embarrassment in Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ (2024) and Dark in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Orion and the Dark’ (2024). Beyond acting, Hauser has also engaged in professional wrestling, signing with Major League Wrestling in 2024, and released an EP under the moniker Signet Ringer in 2022.
