Penelope Mitchell was born on July 24, 1991, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her mother is a French-born artist, and her father is an Australian entrepreneur. She spent her childhood in Australia with her two older brothers. Mitchell’s early life included extensive ballet training, which she pursued from the age of 4 to 16. Academically, she performed well, finishing in the top 1% of her graduating class with an International Baccalaureate diploma. Mitchell attended Melbourne University with an initial interest in law. She completed her undergraduate degree in Arts: Media Communication before relocating to Los Angeles to begin her acting career.
Mitchell commenced her acting career a few years before securing significant roles. Her early work included appearances on the Australian children’s show ‘Toon Time,’ the ABC (Australia) program ‘Next Stop Hollywood,’ which documented her move to Hollywood to audition for pilots, and an episode of the Australian police drama ‘Rush.’ In the United States, Mitchell gained recognition for her role as Letha Godfrey in the American horror television series ‘Hemlock Grove’ (2013). She also appeared as Liv Parker on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ from 2014 to 2015, spanning seasons 5 and 6. She is a cousin of actress Radha Mitchell.
Her career continued to develop with roles in feature films such as ‘The Fear of Darkness’ (2014) and ‘Zipper’ (2015). More recently, Mitchell was cast as Renée Picard in the television series ‘Star Trek: Picard’ (2022), appearing in four episodes. She also played Ganeida in the film ‘Hellboy’ (2019) and had roles in ‘R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned’ (2022) as Jeanne, ‘Muzzle’ (2023) as Mia, and ‘Sting’ (2024) as Heather. Her range of work demonstrates a consistent presence in both television and film productions.
