Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis, known professionally as Theo James, was born on December 16, 1984, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He pursued his education at the University of Nottingham, earning a philosophy degree, and later trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. James began his acting career in 2010, making his television debut in “A Passionate Woman” and gaining early recognition for his role as Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk in an episode of “Downton Abbey.” His early film work included an appearance in “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” (2010).
James’ career progressed with roles in various genres. In 2012, he appeared in “Underworld: Awakening” as David, a role he reprised in “Underworld: Blood Wars” (2016). His breakthrough came with the lead role of Tobias “Four” Eaton in “The Divergent Series,” starring in “Divergent” (2014), “Insurgent” (2015), and “Allegiant” (2016), where he performed his own stunts. In television, he led the American crime-drama series “Golden Boy” (2013) and later starred as Sidney Parker in the British series “Sanditon” (2019-2022), also serving as an executive producer.
More recently, James has expanded his work into producing and has taken on significant roles in acclaimed projects.
