About

Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg, born on January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana, embarked on a distinguished career that saw him rise through local and national politics. The only child of Joseph and Jennifer Anne Buttigieg, both professors at the University of Notre Dame, Buttigieg displayed academic excellence from a young age. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 2004 with a degree in history and literature, and subsequently attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a Bachelor of Arts with first-class honors in philosophy, politics, and economics in 2007. His early career included work as a consultant at McKinsey & Company and policy roles on various Democratic political campaigns.

Buttigieg’s commitment to public service deepened with his enlistment in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2007, serving as an intelligence officer and attaining the rank of lieutenant. He was deployed to Afghanistan for seven months in 2014, a period during which he took a leave of absence from his duties as Mayor of South Bend. He had been elected Mayor of South Bend in 2011, becoming one of the youngest mayors of a U.S. city with over 100,000 residents at the time. During his two terms as mayor, he focused on urban revitalization initiatives such as the “Vacant and Abandoned Properties Initiative” and the “Smart Streets” program, and notably came out as gay in 2015, making him Indiana’s first openly gay elected executive.

His national profile significantly increased with his campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 United States presidential election. Despite starting as a long-shot candidate, he gained considerable momentum, winning the Iowa caucuses and placing second in the New Hampshire primary, marking a historic achievement as the first openly gay candidate to win a presidential primary or caucus. Following his presidential campaign, Buttigieg was appointed by President Joe Biden as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation in 2021, becoming the first openly gay Cabinet secretary in U.S. history. In this role, he has focused on large-scale infrastructure projects, modernizing transportation systems, and advocating for racial equity in infrastructure development.
