Early in his career, Holmes explored a path toward becoming a youth pastor, a role that involved public speaking. His passion for comedy, however, eventually became his primary focus. He started his comedy career in New York City, later moving to Chicago and Los Angeles to further his pursuits. In the mid-2000s, Holmes began making club appearances and was featured on Comedy Central’s ‘Premium Blend’ and VH1’s ‘Best Week Ever’ and ‘All Access.’ He also toured on the Christian comedy circuit and had cartoons published in ‘The New Yorker’ beginning in 2006. In 2009, he appeared in a Super Bowl XLIII commercial for Doritos.
Holmes achieved significant recognition in the early 2010s. In 2010, he performed on ‘John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show’ and ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,’ and had his first television special on ‘Comedy Central Presents.’ He released his debut comedy album, ‘Impregnated With Wonder,’ in 2011, followed by ‘Nice Try, The Devil’ in 2013. The same year, Holmes launched his podcast, ‘You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes,’ which features interviews with comedians and discussions on topics including comedy, sexuality, and religion. He provided voice work for Comedy Central’s ‘Ugly Americans’ and was the voice of the E-Trade baby in several television commercials. Holmes also worked as a writer for NBC’s ‘Outsourced’ and Fox’s ‘I Hate My Teenage Daughter.’ He created and starred in the CollegeHumor internet series ‘Badman.’
In 2013, Holmes’ talk show pilot for TBS, produced by Conan O’Brien, was picked up and became ‘The Pete Holmes Show,’ airing for two seasons. From 2017 to 2019, he created and starred in the semi-autobiographical HBO series ‘Crashing,’ which explored a comedian’s life after divorce. His third comedy special, ‘Faces and Sounds,’ was released in 2016, and his fourth, ‘Dirty Clean,’ in 2018. In 2019, he published his book ‘Comedy Sex God.’ Holmes took on the lead role of Tom Smallwood in the CBS sitcom ‘How We Roll,’ which premiered in 2022.
