Former luger Peter Penz hails from Austria and competed in the sport between the years 2003 and 2018. At the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018, he and his doubles partner Georg Fischler won two medals: a silver in the doubles competition and a bronze in the team relay. They also won the European Luge Championships for the doubles event at Paramonovo in 2012, when they took home the gold medal. In addition, the duo was victorious in the FIL World Luge Championships, where they won a total of six medals, including four in the doubles competition and two in the mixed team competition.
In the mixed team competition at the FIL World Luge Championships, Penz earned a silver medal in 2009 and a bronze medal in 2007. At the championships held in Oberhof, Germany in 2008, he also competed in the men’s doubles event and earned a fifth-place result. At the 2008 FIL European Luge Championships, held in Cesana, Italy, Penz also competed in the men’s doubles event and earned a sixth-place finish.
Penz and Fischler made the announcement that they would no longer be competing in August of 2018, in part because Penz was experiencing back problems at the time. He made it clear that he would continue to be involved in the sport in some capacity, specifically as a coach for the Austrian Luge Federation. In November of 2018, the duo participated in the inaugural round of the Luge World Cup 2018–19 at Igls. This was their final outing in a competitive event.
