Philip Doyle

Philip Doyle, born on September 17, 1992, in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, began his athletic career in hockey before transitioning to rowing. He attended St. Mary’s Primary School from 1996 to 2004 and Banbridge Academy from 2004 to 2011, where he achieved success in hockey, including winning the Bannister Bowl (2006) and the Burney Cup (2010 & 2011). He also represented Ulster U16 and Ireland U16 in inter-provincial and European championships. Doyle pursued medicine at Queen’s University Belfast in 2012, graduating in 2018. During his studies, he took up rowing in 2013 with Belfast Boat Club, winning the British University Championships as a novice in 2014.

Doyle made his senior international rowing debut in 2018, competing in the men’s singles and later the men’s double sculls at the Plovdiv World Championships. He then worked as a foundation 1 doctor at Belfast City Hospital from December 2018 to April 2019 before returning to full-time rowing. In 2019, partnered with Ronan Byrne, he secured a silver medal at World Rowing Cup III in Rotterdam and another silver at the World Rowing Championships in Linz. This achievement qualified their boat for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where they competed in the M2x event. In 2021, he and Ronan Byrne earned a silver medal at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne.

His career progression continued with Daire Lynch. In 2023, coupled with Daire Lynch, he secured a bronze medal at the World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, which qualified them for the 2024 Paris Olympics. In 2024, Doyle achieved further success with a silver at World Cup II and a gold at World Cup III. The culmination of his efforts came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he and Daire Lynch won a bronze medal in the M2x event. He has also competed in the World Championships in Plovdiv (2018), Linz (2019), and Belgrade (2023), and the European Championships in Lucerne (2019), Varese (2021), and Bled (2023). Doyle plans to focus on his medicine career in 2025 before making a decision on further Olympic pursuits for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
