Pidgeon Pagonis has reshaped public understanding of intersex lives through writing, art, and relentless advocacy. Born in 1986 in Chicago to a family of Mexican and Greek ancestry, they were diagnosed in childhood with androgen insensitivity syndrome yet never told the truth about their own body. Assigned female at birth, they underwent a series of nonconsensual cosmetic surgeries and were falsely told they had ovarian cancer.
Everything changed during their freshman year at DePaul University, when a lecture introduced them to the word ‘intersex.’ That single term set them on a path of discovery, prompting them to request their own medical records and confront the history that had been hidden from them for so long.
Since then, Pagonis has become a leading voice in the intersex movement, working with advocacy organizations, speaking at universities and conferences, and sharing their story widely through essays and media appearances. Their memoir, ‘Nobody Needs to Know,’ published in 2023, offers an unflinching account of the medical secrecy that shaped their early life.
Through their work as an artist, educator, and organizer, Pagonis continues to push for an end to unnecessary surgeries on intersex children and to build a world where intersex people can live openly and with pride.
