Ibn Young, known professionally as Playa Fly, was born on September 2, 1977, in Memphis, Tennessee. He embarked on his musical journey in 1993, initially releasing an underground album titled “From Da Darkness Of Da Kut” under the moniker Lil Fly. His early work established him within the Memphis rap scene, leading to collaborations and eventual solo pursuits. A significant turning point in his early career was signing a three-album contract with Super Sigg Records, which further solidified his presence in the hip-hop genre. During this period, he produced several underground hits.
In 1996, Playa Fly released “Fly Shit” through Super Sigg, featuring tracks like “Nappy Hair & Gold Teeth” and “Da Show.” This album marked the beginning of his collaboration with producer Blackout. He followed this with “Movin’ On” in 1998, which reached number 90 on the US R&B Albums chart. This album included “Nobody” and featured artists such as Gangsta Blac. In 1999, Super Sigg Records released two more albums from him: “Just Gettin’ It On,” a re-release of his solo CD with a bonus track, and “Da Game Owe Me,” which peaked at number 63 on the US R&B Albums chart. A music video was produced for the bonus track “Fuck A Wanna Be” (retitled “Just A Wanna Be”), marking his only music video production to date.
Following his time with Super Sigg, Playa Fly established his own label, Minnie Mae Muzik, named after his grandmother. Under this new label, he commenced production on the album “Fly2K.” However, this project faced delays when he was incarcerated in 1999 after an arrest for narcotics possession, serving a seven-year sentence. “Fly2K” was eventually released in November 2002, featuring contributions even during his imprisonment, including a cappella phone recordings for tracks like “Flexxin’ Skit.” After his release from prison in mid-2006, Fly resumed his career, planning a new album titled “Mafia All Day” and joining the New Prophet Camp. He released the single “Horses” in 2006 and “Blast Off” in 2010, continuing to engage with his fanbase.
