About

Rachel Leah Bloom was born on April 3, 1987, in Los Angeles County, California. She grew up in Manhattan Beach, California, and attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 2009 with a B.F.A. in Drama. While at NYU, she was a head writer and director for the sketch comedy group Hammerkatz. After college, she continued to hone her comedic skills at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York and later in Los Angeles. Her career gained significant traction with her YouTube comedy music videos, particularly “Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury” in 2010, which went viral and earned a Hugo Award nomination, establishing her distinctive voice in musical comedy.

Bloom co-created, executive produced, and starred as Rebecca Bunch in The CW musical comedy-drama series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” which aired from 2015 to 2019. This role brought her widespread critical acclaim, earning her a Golden Globe Award, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a TCA Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. During this period, she also released musical comedy albums like “Please Love Me” (2013) and “Suck It, Christmas” (2013), and worked as a television writer for shows such as “Allen Gregory” and “Robot Chicken.”

Beyond her work on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Bloom has expanded her career into film and stage. She co-starred in the film “Most Likely to Murder” (2018), directed by her husband Dan Gregor, and lent her voice to animated features including “The Angry Birds Movie 2” (2019) and “Trolls World Tour” (2020). Her one-woman show, “Death, Let Me Do My Show,” received critical acclaim during its Off-Broadway runs in 2023 and was adapted into a Netflix special in 2024. In 2020, she released her memoir, “I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are,” further showcasing her talent across various creative mediums while openly discussing her experiences with mental health.
