South African singer-songwriter Ranwin Le-Roy appeared on the Chinese edition of The Voice, and has become known for his unorthodox musical compositions and live performances, which combine soul vocals with modern R&B, pop, electropop, and hip-hop sounds.
Le-Roy initially attended medical school in China so that he could complete his bachelor’s degrees in medicine and surgery at Wenzhou Medical College. One day, he had issues with his phone while he was on campus, so he went to the mall to have it serviced and noticed advertisements for auditions for The Voice. Le-roy had nothing to lose and everything to gain, so he auditioned, got a callback, and was then asked to appear on the show.
His debut single Painting the Canvas in 2018 was compared to Justin Bieber, Icona Pop, and the Spice Girls by iHeart Radio. Jody Steel contributed a spoken word segment to his second song, I Am Enough, in 2019. I Am Enough is an encouragement to Le-roy’s audience to recognise their own value. Both singles appear in the EP Mood, which was also released in 2019, and is available on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon, Tidal and Deezer, among other streaming services. He keeps up with his fans on Instagram @ranwin, where he boasts more than 80,000 followers and posts images of himself wearing stylish, striking outfits. He uses the pronouns he/him/they/them.
