Renzo Gracie was born on March 11, 1967, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a member of the renowned Gracie family, fundamental to the development of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He is the grandson of Carlos Gracie, co-founder of Gracie jiu-jitsu, and son of Robson Gracie. Following family tradition, Gracie began his Jiu-Jitsu training at a young age, receiving instruction from legendary Gracie instructors including Rolls Gracie. By the age of 20, he had already achieved recognition as a multiple-time BJJ champion in Brazil. His competitive career in mixed martial arts began in 1992, participating in early Brazilian vale tudo circuits before transitioning to international stages.
Gracie’s career is marked by significant involvement in major mixed martial arts promotions globally. He competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Pride Fighting Championships, K-1, RINGS, and International Fight League (IFL). A notable milestone early in his career was winning the World Combat Championships 1 tournament in 1995. He continued to compete against prominent figures in MMA, showcasing his grappling prowess. Beyond competition, Gracie established the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City in 1996, which became a cornerstone for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in America and led to over 70 active affiliates worldwide. In 2008, a documentary film titled ‘Renzo Gracie: Legacy’ chronicled his influence on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts over a decade.
Throughout his career, Gracie also excelled in submission grappling, notably securing two ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship titles in 1998 and 2000. He transitioned his competitive experience into a distinguished coaching career, mentoring numerous top fighters, including former UFC champions Georges St-Pierre and Matt Serra, as well as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. His contributions to the sport were further recognized with his induction into the ADCC Hall of Fame on February 21, 2022, and he received his 7th-degree coral belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on January 18, 2023, by Rickson Gracie in Abu Dhabi. He has co-authored two instructional books, ‘Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique’ and ‘Mastering Jujitsu’, solidifying his role as an educator in martial arts.
