Riawna Capri’s career in hairstyling began in her teenage years, cutting hair for $5 in her garage. Despite initial parental encouragement to attend college, her passion for beauty led her to pursue beauty school after an unsuccessful college application. She aimed to work at a top Los Angeles salon, Fred Segal Beauty, where she eventually secured a position. It was there that she met Nikki Lee, who would become her business partner. Together, they developed a reputation for efficient extension application, leading to their first celebrity clients, Nelly Furtado and Brittany Murphy.
Capri and Lee transitioned to working at a salon opened by Kenny Paves before deciding to establish their own salon. In 2009, faced with a sudden withdrawal of investment, they used their personal savings and credit cards to open Nine Zero One Salon at 901 Westbourne Drive. This marked a significant turning point in their careers, as they built a successful business from the ground up, attracting a diverse clientele including high-profile individuals like Julianne Hough, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nina Dobrev. Capri is known for creating distinctive styles, such as ‘The Julianne,’ a short, textured haircut commonly requested by clients.
Beyond her salon work, Capri has expanded her influence through educational initiatives and product development. She co-founded IN COMMON Beauty, a luxury hair care brand, and utilizes platforms like Beauty Coach to offer free education videos for stylists. Her work has been featured in publications like Allure and People, where she shares her hairstyling techniques and insights. Capri emphasizes teaching clients how to style their own hair and maintains a holistic approach to beauty, including heat protection and moisturizing.
