Robert Klein

Robert Klein, a Grammy and Emmy-nominated comedian, actor, and writer, made history in 1975 by starring in HBO’s first-ever stand-up comedy special, a pivotal moment that redefined televised comedy. Prior to this landmark achievement, Klein had already established himself, joining the renowned Second City theatrical troupe in Chicago in the spring of 1965 to hone his improvisational skills. His career quickly progressed with his Broadway debut in 1966 in ‘The Apple Tree.’ Klein expanded his reach into television, hosting ‘Comedy Tonight’ in 1970 and making multiple appearances as host on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1975 and again in 1978. His stand-up recordings garnered significant acclaim, with albums such as ‘A Child of the 50s’ (1973) and ‘Mind Over Matter’ (1974) each earning Grammy Award nominations for Best Comedy Album.

Klein maintained a strong presence in television, with recurring roles in series like ‘Law & Order: SVU’ (2009–2012), ‘The Good Wife’ (2013–2014), and ‘Madam Secretary’ (2014). More recently, Klein reprised his role as the Mayor of New York in ‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’ (2014) and ‘Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!’ (2015). He also appeared in ‘Will & Grace’ (2018–2019). His enduring impact on comedy was highlighted in the 2016 documentary ‘Robert Klein: Still Can’t Stop His Leg,’ which chronicled his pioneering career and lasting influence on American entertainment.
