Robert Livingston is a seasoned football coach, currently serving as the Defensive Coordinator/Safeties coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, bringing significant NFL experience.
Robert Livingston currently serves as the Defensive Coordinator/Safeties for the University of Colorado's football team. He joined the staff in February 2024 and in his first season, the Buffs defense showed dramatic improvement, leading to a 9-4 record. He signed a two-year deal making him the highest-paid assistant in program history.
Robert Livingston was born on November 29, 1985, in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He played free safety at the College of William & Mary from 2007 to 2009, contributing to a top defensive unit in the NCAA’s FCS ranks and graduating with a degree in kinesiology. After his playing career, Livingston transitioned into coaching, beginning his professional journey with a focus on defense.
Livingston began his coaching career at Furman as the safeties coach in 2010, followed by a role as a defensive quality control analyst at Vanderbilt in 2011. His NFL career started with the Cincinnati Bengals as a scout from 2012 to 2014, evaluating talent primarily from the ACC and SEC conferences. He then advanced to a quality control analyst and special teams assistant in 2015. In 2016, he became the safeties and defensive backs coach for the Bengals, a position he held through the 2023 season. During his tenure with the Bengals, the team reached Super Bowl LVI and made another AFC Championship game appearance in 2022. He coached notable players such as Jessie Bates III, Vonn Bell, and Chidobe Awuzie, contributing to significant defensive improvements, including holding opponents to a 59.3% completion percentage in the latter half of the 2019 season and ranking eighth in passing yards allowed per game in 2017.
In February 2024, Livingston joined the University of Colorado as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach. In his first season with the Buffaloes, the defense made substantial improvements, reducing points allowed by 11.7 per game and yards allowed by 101.4 per game. The team improved from 121st in scoring defense to 43rd, and from 124th in passing yards allowed to 40th. The Buffaloes’ defense also led the Big 12 in sacks, moving from 64th nationally to 15th. His work contributed to the team’s record improving from 4-8 to 9-4. Livingston signed a two-year deal worth $1.55 million per year, becoming the highest-paid assistant coach in program history. He is married to Tricia, and they have a son, Luke, and three daughters, Emma, Savannah, and Lily.
