Robert Reffkin, born on June 7, 1979, is an American entrepreneur and the co-founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Compass, Inc. His inspiration for entering the real estate sector stemmed from his mother, Ruth, a long-time real estate agent who later joined Compass. Reffkin pursued his education at Columbia University, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Business Administration degree. His early career included significant roles at McKinsey & Company, where he was the youngest analyst hired at the time, and Goldman Sachs, where he served as a vice president and chief of staff to President and COO Gary Cohn. He also served as a White House Fellow, working for Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snow.
In 2007, Reffkin established New York Needs You, a non-profit organization, now known as America Needs You, dedicated to mentoring low-income college students. To raise funds for this initiative, he undertook the challenge of running 50 marathons across all 50 states, successfully raising $1 million. In 2012, Reffkin co-founded Compass, Inc., alongside Ori Allon, with a vision to revolutionize the real estate industry by integrating technology to enhance agents’ capabilities. The company went public in April 2021, and under his leadership, Compass grew to become a prominent real estate brokerage. He also authored the book “No One Succeeds Alone: Learn Everything You Can from Everyone You Can,” published in 2021, with all proceeds donated to non-profits supporting young individuals.
Reffkin’s entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 15 when he launched a DJ company funded by his bar mitzvah and babysitting savings, demonstrating an early aptitude for business. His career reflects a commitment to empowering others, from supporting real estate agents with advanced technology to establishing a non-profit aimed at enabling first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds. Reffkin’s work at Compass is characterized by strategic partnerships that have significantly influenced the real estate landscape, building an incredible brand with collaborators such as Zillow and Breitenbach Advisory.
