Born in Zaandam, Netherlands, on March 21, 1963, Ronald Koeman embarked on his professional football career at FC Groningen. His early prowess as a high-scoring defender quickly earned him recognition, leading to a significant transfer to AFC Ajax in 1983. At Ajax, Koeman secured the national Eredivisie title in the 1984–85 season. His career progression continued as he moved to rivals PSV Eindhoven in 1986. With PSV, he achieved remarkable success, winning three consecutive Eredivisie titles between 1986 and 1989 and the coveted European Cup in 1988. This period marked him as one of only five European players to win a treble with their club and a cup with their national team in the same year, solidifying his reputation as a formidable player.
Koeman’s international career was equally distinguished, as he was a pivotal member of the Netherlands national team. Alongside football legends like Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit, he helped the Netherlands clinch the UEFA Euro 1988 title. He also represented his country in the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups, captaining the team in the latter. In 1989, a significant turning point came when Koeman joined FC Barcelona, becoming an integral part of Johan Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team.’ During his six years at Barcelona, he contributed to four consecutive La Liga titles from 1991 to 1994 and famously scored the winning goal in the 1992 European Cup Final against Sampdoria, securing Barcelona’s first European title.
Transitioning into management, Koeman continued to collect accolades. He led AFC Ajax to two Eredivisie titles in 2001–02 and 2003–04, and PSV Eindhoven to another Eredivisie title in 2006–07, becoming the only individual to have played for and managed the ‘Big Three’ Dutch clubs: Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord. His managerial journey extended internationally, with spells at S.L. Benfica, Valencia C.F., where he won the 2007–08 Copa del Rey, and Premier League clubs Southampton F.C. and Everton F.C. He also served as the manager for the Netherlands national team from 2018 to 2020 and again from 2023, guiding them to the UEFA Nations League runner-up position in 2019 and the Euro 2024 semi-finals. He also managed FC Barcelona from 2020 to 2021, winning the 2020–21 Copa del Rey.
